Japan's Osaka Signs New Sakhalin-2 Contract

Japanese gas distributer Osaka Gas has signed a contract with Russia’s new Salkhalin-2 operating company to continue purchasing 200,000 tonnes of LNG per year.

  • Shell exited the project after the invasion of Ukraine but Japanese trading houses Mitsui and Mitsubishi kept their stakes with the new Russian operator.
  • Osaka Gas had been buying 200,000 tonnes of LNG per year from the Sakhalin 2 project since 2008 - or about 2% of the Japanese company's supply - under a contract that had been set to expire in 2031.
  • Japan’s Tokyo Gas and JERA also signed LNG supply contracts with the new Sakhlain-2 operator to keep purchasing LNG.
