Kazakhstan Targets Gas to Replace Coal

The President of Kazakhstan has ordered his government to increase domestic sales of natural gas by 2 billion cubic meters a year at the expense of exports to cut domestic coal consumption.

  • The additional sales must come from the Chevron-led giant Tengiz oil and gas field.
  • Last year, Kazakhstan piped 6 bcm of gas to China and 1 bcm to Russia.
  • The country is looking to reform its cola dominated electric power sector.
  • It is not yet clear what the timing of the increased sales target is.
