Q: Could the ECB respond to higher inflation coming from the lower bound? The GC expect net purchases to end shortly before it raises policy rates, what does this ‘shortly before’ mean if inflation is running too high for too long?

  • A: How do you hike interest rates? By hiking interest rates. We will have a sophisticated and determined analytical approach to doing that. We will look at net asset purchases first on a gradual data dependent basis and then we will look at interest rates.
  • We will remain faithful to our sequencing. Don’t assume too much in terms of the immediacy of hikes. We are not going to be complacent, but we will not be rushed either. We will follow our sequencing and we will be gradual.
