Latest Developments Could Exacerbate International Tensions

The national security unit of the Hong Kong police has arrested 11 people on the charge of "assisting offenders" for helping activists flee to Taiwan, Now TV reports.

  • The global community has condemned attempts by China to quash dissent. On December 30 2020 China sentenced 10 Hong Kong activists up to three years in prison, defying calls for their release from the U.S. and others. The activists had made attempts to escape by boat and were charged with organising an illegal border crossing.
  • The case was a focal point for pro-democracy activist, where historic protests against Beijing's rule have dwindled amid the security law and Covid-19 restrictions. Recent developments could further strain relations between the U.S. and China, as President-elect Joe Biden prepares to take office after years of deteriorating ties under Donald Trump.
