Lawmakers Set to Approve Bill in Bid to Unlock EU Cohesion Funds

  • Lawmakers are expected to approve a bill aimed at de-politicising the courts in an effort to unlock some of the funds the EU has blocked over rule-of-law and corruption concerns, Bloomberg report. The bill has already received the blessing of the European Commission. EU Budget Commissioner Hahn told journalists that approval may help Hungary tap EUR13bln of EU funds that are part of a EUR22bln pot of cohesion monies.
  • The European Commission has adopted measures designed to curb the fallout from lifting the restrictions on the imports of Ukrainian agricultural products, the EC said in a statement on Tuesday as cited by MTI. The measures will last until June 5 and "aim to alleviate logistical bottlenecks concerning these products in Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia," the statement said.
  • There are no major data releases or speaker events scheduled for today. Industrial production (Est: -2.9% y/y) and retail sales figures (Est: -13.6%) are on the docket on Friday.
