Light Distillate Exports Fall as Refiners Push for Diesel

Global diesel exports in Q4 2022 were 8% higher compared to Q4 2021 according to Vortexa, largely due to a large push from China and Russia.

  • January 2023 is showing continued strength.
  • As global middle distillate exports have grown, the percentage share of light distillate exports (red line) have declined due to refineries switching yields to take advantage of the high diesel margins last year.
  • It could see global refineries moving back towards light distillate production – especially ahead of the US summer driving season.
