MIDEAST: Little Sign Of Escalation In Lebanon As IDF Withdrawal Deadline Passes

MIDEAST

The ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel in Lebanon remains in the balance as the deadline for a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon passes today. Israel has pulled back the large majority of its forces in the south of the country to within its own borders. However, the IDF claims that troops must remain in five strategic locations as a “temporary measure” given they provide vantage points over communities in northern Israel. The Lebanese gov't has said that says any remaining Israeli presence on Lebanese soil would be considered an occupation.

  • Hezbollah is also required to withdraw from southern Lebanon across the Litani River, with the Lebanese army due to deploy into the region to provide a buffer. As NYT notes, "Although the U.S.-led monitoring committee has praised the Lebanese military’s deployment, the body has not released public data on the extent to which Hezbollah has withdrawn its weapons and fighters from the region."
  • CNN reports "Signaling that Hezbollah is unlikely to launch an immediate fight against Israel’s remaining troops, the group’s Al Manar TV declared on Tuesday that southern Lebanon had “returned because of the blood of the martyrs.
  • The public funeral of Hassan Nasrallah, the Hezbollah leader killed in an Israeli airstrike in September 2024, will take place Friday 23 Feb. Iran has confirmed a 'high level' attendance at the event which is expected to draw thousands of mourners. Comments from Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem will be watched closely for signals of whether the current ceasefire will hold in the long term.
