Lower US Gasoline Cracks in 2024 Amid Higher Stocks: EIA

OIL PRODUCTS

Higher US gasoline inventories are expected to contribute to lower US gasoline crack spreads in 2024 falling by 15 cents/gal compared with 2023 according to the EIA monthly oil report.

  • EIA forecast gasoline inventories to build by 30mbbls from end-October 2023 to end-January 2024 amid increasing refinery runs at a time when motor gasoline demand is at its lowest for the year.
  • Inventories are expected to remain higher than the previous year in January despite a below-average inventory build.
  • Lower crack spreads reduce the forecast of the annual average US retail gasoline price from more than $3.50/gal this year to less than $3.40/gal in 2024.
