Medium Term in China Looks Relatively Healthy: Vitol

Chinese energy demand still has room to grow but diesel use by industry and for freight is a little more disappointing according to Mike Muller at Vitol.

  • “China in the medium term looks relatively healthy” he said, adding that “mobility data in China is good, even strong I would say” although overall economic data from China “don’t inspire confidence” in markets.
  • Growing demand could provide a potential uplift for oil markets later this year even amid concerns for weak economic data.
  • Diesel exports from China have not been as strong as expected with shipments of about 500ktons/month with gasoline exports of about 1m tons/month.
  • China makes up “a good chunk” of the global shortfall in jet fuel demand which is still 250k-300kb/d below 2019 levels.
