Ministers Outline Ambitious Capacity Plans

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Grid capacity is a focus among local press, with Electricity Minister Ramakgopa outlining plans to increase transmission lines and electricity infrastructure across South Africa with an ambitious set of plans that should result in a 600% increase in capacity over the next 10 years. Plans include the immediate rollout of three separate plans to increase capacity by 2,300MW – equating to two levels of load-shedding.
  • Eskom started the week with 4,000MW of load-shedding into 5am today, before cuts are scaled back to 2,000MW during the day until 4pm today – after which blackouts ramp up again overnight.
  • Private credit data came in ahead of expectations, rising by 6.25% vs. Exp. 5.90%. Meanwhile, M3 money supply rose 11.15% on a Y/Y basis. Trade balance data is the focus for the week ahead, with markets expecting the surplus to shrink to R5.0bln from R10.2bln prior.
  • Data picks up later in the week, with ABSA Manufacturing PMI tomorrow, and S&P PMI following on Thursday.
