MNI Brief: US 2021 Retail Sales Seen Highest Since 2004 - NRF

WASHINGTON (MNI)

Retail sales this year are projected to grow between 6.5% and 8.2% over 2020, the National Retail Federation said Wednesday, the highest annual percent increase since 2004 as vaccine optimism fuels expectations for a speedy reopening of the economy and a post-pandemic spending boom.

That will put 2021 retail sales at USD4.33 trillion compared with 2020's USD4.06 trillion, according to preliminary NRF estimates. The numbers exclude motor vehicle and parts dealers, gas stations, and restaurants.

Although sales slipped at the end of last year, consumers in 2021 have record-high levels of savings and have paid down a substantial amount of debt, NRF President and CEO Matthew Shea told reporters on a conference call, and enhanced government support and low interest rates should influence more spending through the year.
