MNI BRIEF: Canada Flash Sep Retails -1.9%, Aug Sales +2.1%

OTTAWA (MNI)

Canadian retail sales fell 1.9% in September according to a flash estimate following a 2.1% increase for August, with the last significant data before Wednesday's BOC rate decision tilting the risks back towards a focus on weak GDP over signs of hotter inflation.

Statistics Canada's report didn't outline what industries led the decline in September, another time of transition as more people were vaccinated to meet work requirements and economists speculated about a shift to more spending on close-contact services over buying goods like furniture.

August's sales gain was led by food and beverage stores, gas stations and record sales at clothing outlets. July retail sales were revised up to a 0.1% decline from an earlier 0.6% fall.
