MNI DATA PREVIEW: Canada Set For 3rd Straight Trade Surplus

MNI (Ottawa)
OTTAWA (MNI)

Canada will likely report its third consecutive monthly trade surplus on Tuesday, the longest such streak since 2014.

Economists predict the surplus will narrow to CAD500 million in March from February's CAD1 billion, in a report due from Statistics Canada at 830am EST.

The global semiconductor shortage will hurt Canada's auto exports, a drag likely to continue into April. StatsCan has also warned the Suez Canal blockage could hurt trade flows in coming months, though Canada has benefitted far more from a surge in commodity prices.

Also due is the March report on building permits, which economists see rising 1.5% to another record high.
