MNI BRIEF: BOJ Kuroda: Loss On ETFs If Nikkei Breaks 20,000

(MNI) Tokyo
TOKYO (MNI)

Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda said on Thursday that the central bank would post unrealised losses on its exchange traded fund holdings if the Nikkei stock index falls below the 20,000 level.

Kuroda told lawmakers that the BOJ has no plans to sell its ETF holdings and that its purchases will continue as it takes time to achieve the 2% price target. He also said it is premature to discuss an exit of easy policy and added that should the bank decide to sell ETFs in future, it will try its utmost to avoid losses or disturb the market.

The Nikkei has lost more than 1,800 points over the past four trading days amid the volatility in global markets.
