MNI BRIEF: EU Fiscal Policies Should Stay Expansive: Gentiloni

BRUSSELS (MNI)

It was not enough for euro zone countries to return to GDP levels last seen before the COVID pandemic, but they must target the levels of output that were forecast for coming years in Commission's 2019 forecast, EU Economic Affairs Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni said Wednesday, noting that euro zone economies are "quite a long way from reaching this."

His comments followed the EU Commission's Interim Summer Forecast, which showed the euro zone as a whole returning to pre-COVID GDP levels in the final quarter of 2021.

The commissioner said that the review of the EU's fiscal rules, which is due to get underway in October, should have as its main focus ensuring stability and sustainable growth.
