MNI BRIEF: EU Sefcovic Welcomes Change Of UK Tone In NI Talks

(MNI) Brussels

EU Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic welcomed a changed tone in the UK side in talks on the implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol, saying he hoped "this will lead to tangible results for the people of Northern Ireland."

The commissioner told the press Friday that the EU and UK had agreed to intensify talks next week to make headway in the field of trade in medicines, saying that solution in this sector could provide a "blueprint" for solutions in the other remaining issues in the talks.

Sefcovic said that there had been no change in the EU's insistence that there could be no change to the European Court of Justice's role in the legal enforcement of the protocol, until recently a key demand of the UK government.

He added he would meet with UK lead negotiator David Frost again in Brussels next Friday.
