MNI BRIEF: EU States Differ On Vax Export Rules, Urge Caution

BRUSSELS (MNI)

EU member states still have different views on the EU's new authorisation mechanism for Covid-19 vaccine exports and will be taking a cautious approach to its implementation, an EU official told MNI, noting that the mechanism is principally "aimed at companies which are not fulfilling their obligations. The main priority is to increase production and rollout of vaccines," the official said.

The official also noted that Brussels had established a good communication channel with the new US administration on the issue of trade in vaccines and was working well with the US to maintain global supply chains. U.S. President Joe Biden will address the summit Thursday evening but the official said that his intervention was expected to be "time limited".
