German business confidence improved markedly in March, despite rising infection rates, with all sectors seeing monthly gain and the services sector business climate rising significantly as "cautious optimism returned for the first time since the fall," the Ifo Institute said Friday. Trade business climate surged with both current situation and expectations rising, however the retail sector remains down.

Optimism in the manufacturing sector rose to the highest level since November 2010 as demand for manufactured goods rose sharply. Business climate in the construction sector shifted back to positive territory in March

The Ifo business climate indicator rose further in March to 96.6, beating market expectations, hitting the highest level since June 2019. Current conditions gained 2.4pt and rose to 93.0. The Ifo Expectations index increased 5.4pt to 100.4, also coming in stronger than expected, showing the highest level since April 2018.
