MNI DATA BRIEF: US July Retail Sales Slide On Auto Slowdown

Monthly retail sales growth plummeted in July, falling 1.1% when financial markets had anticipated a much smaller 0.2% decline. June's 0.6% increase was revised up slightly to 0.7%.

July's decrease was driven mostly by sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers, which fell 3.9% after falling 2.2% in June. Other notable declines came from sales at nonstore retailers (-3.1%), clothing and clothing accessory stores (-2.6%), and building material stores (-1.2%). Meanwhile, sales at miscellaneous retailers rose 3.5% through July and sales at gas stations were up 2.4%.

Excluding motor vehicle sales, retail sales were down 0.4% in July after growing 1.6% in June. Excluding motor vehicle and gas station sales, retail sales were down 0.7%. Control group sales were down 0.6%.
