MNI DATA BRIEF: US Small Business Job Openings Hit Record High

MNI (Washington)
WASHINGTON (MNI)

About 42% of small business owners reported job openings they could not fill in March, the National Federation of Independent Business said Thursday, a record high and 20 percentage points higher than the 48-year historical average of 22%.

Finding qualified applicants for available jobs was a significant problem for employers trying to hire through the month, with 91% reporting few or no qualified applicants, according to the small business group's monthly jobs report. A net 28% of business owners said they raised compensation in March, up from 25% in February and the highest level in the past year.

"Where small businesses do have open positions, labor quality remains a significant problem for owners nationwide," NFIB chief economist Bill Dunkelberg said in a statement. "Small business owners are raising compensation to attract the right employees."
