COVID-19 Trends and Developments

  • The United States recorded 187,833 new COVID-19 cases on 19 November, the country's highest 24 hour total during the course of the pandemic so far. Indeed, over the week to 19 November the US registered 1,155,205 new cases. This was more than the next five highest new caseload countries (India, Italy, Brazil, France, the UK) combined. According to data from JHU, only six states are either recording a decline in cases compared to the week prior or are holding largely steady, with 44 – including highly populated states such as California, Texas, New York, and Florida – registering at least a 10% increase in new cases compared to the previous week. According to JHU data, the US also recorded 2,015 fatalities related to coronavirus on 19 November. This is the highest number of deaths registered on a single day due to the virus since 6 May. Health authorities continue to caution against large family gatherings as Thanksgiving festivities get underway next week.
  • India's total caseload crossed the nine million mark on 19 November, although the country's recorded new cases continues to trend downwards. In the week leading to 19 November, India registered on average 39,367 new cases per day. This is the second-lowest weekly average since 22 July. Despite the downtrend, authorities are preparing for a spike in cases following Diwali festivities that took place in early November.
