Editor's note: MNI's COVID-19 Tracker will now be published on a weekly basis, going out each Tuesday.
COVID-19 Trends and Developments
- In the week to November 23, the United States recorded 1,204,828 new cases of coronavirus, the highest seven-day total since the pandemic began. Meanwhile, the weekly fatality total of 10,706 was the highest registered since May 12. On November 22, 83,970 individuals were registered as hospitalised with coronavirus, the highest number on record. There remain major concerns that if families meet up in anything larger than small groups for Thanksgiving at the end of this week it could result in an even greater spike in new infections.
- Authorities in China registerd 339 new COVID-19 cases in the week up to November 23. This is the largest weekly increase in coronavirus cases since the seven days leading up to August 23. At present the spike in cases has not translated into an increase in fatalities, with no COVID-19 related deaths recorded in China since November 9. The spike in cases has come in three cities, two – Manzhouli and Tianjin – in the northern province of Inner Mongolia and in Shanghai.
