US weekly jobless claims filed through May 9 reached 2.98 million Thursday,
above market expectations for 2.5 million and following a revised 3.176 million
level in the May 2 survey week. Continuing claims rose to 22.8 million after
reaching 22.1 million in last week's unemployment insurance report. The Labor
Department said the coronavirus continues to weigh heavily on the level on
initial and continuing claims.
