CZECHIA: MPs Debate Labour Code Changes, Fico Takes Swing At Czech Politicians

CZECHIA
  • The Chamber of Deputies will discuss proposed changes to the labour code during a session starting at 13:00GMT/14:00CET. The amendments would increase the flexibility of the labour market by extending the probationary period and bringing forward the start of the notice period. In addition, ODS and TOP 09 are pushing for making it possible for employers to fire workers without giving a reason, despite continued opposition from KDU-CSL. Prime Minister Petr Fiala said last year that "all business associations" support the proposal, but "if we don't have a majority [in parliament] for it, we won't push it through."
  • A report in Radio Prague noted that Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico accused politicians from the Czech governing coalition of meddling in his country's internal affairs and claimed that the attacks on him were part of a "smear campaign" targeting ANO leader Andrej Babis ahead of this year's parliamentary election. Bratislava-born Babis pledged that if he forms the next Czech government, he will reinstate regular consultations with the Slovak government, which were suspended by the current administration amid tensions over foreign policy.
