MPs Vote to Extend State of Emergency

HUNGARY

Alongside the decision of lawmakers voting in favour the bill bolstering judicial independence, MPs cleared the government to extend the state of emergency due to the war in neighbouring Ukraine until November 25, MTI report.

  • The emergency rule measure allows the government to bypass parliament when enacting policy.
  • In December, Orban used the measures to increase the budget deficit by HUF1trln before getting parliamentary approval.
  • In their justification for the measure, the authors of the bill said the situation regarding the armed conflict and humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine, as well as the consequences on Hungary, related to refugees, the economy and energy, had "not changed in the recent period".
