  • FdI reached second-place in nationwide opinion polls in May initially, and over the course of late-May and early June been able to sustain the narrow lead over the centre-left PD in polls. The FdI now trails only the populist-right wing League of former Deputy PM Matteo Salvini in polling.
  • FdI has seen a steady increase in support over the past 12 months, something sustained in early 2020 following the collapse of the M5S-PD gov't of PM Giuseppe Conte and its replacement with a broad-coalition gov't under former ECB President Mario Draghi. The party is the largest grouping in parliament that is not part of the gov't, and therefore acts as the official opposition.
  • Party leader Giorgia Meloni's position as the most prominent anti-gov't member of the Chamber of Deputies, combined with an increase in migrant flows across the Mediterranean to Italy from North Africa, has sustained a shift in right-wing support from the League to the Brothers of Italy.
