US: New Jersey Senator Cory Booker has announced he is withdrawing from the race
to become the Democratic presidential nominee.
- Booker had been trailing heavily in nationwide polls and those in key early
voting states.
- His flagging campaign and lack of funding meant he was unable to break through
into the top-tier of candidates. He was ineligible to take the stage in the 14
January Democratic debate in Des Moines, IA, due to his low polling.
- With Booker's withdrawal, the only candidates coming from ethnic minority
backgrounds are entrepreneur Andrew Yang and former governor of Massachusetts
Deval Patrick. Both are seen as extreme long-shots for the nomination.
