Pandor Requests Removal of US Steel Tariffs

SOUTH AFRICA
  • In a bilateral meeting with US Secretary of State Blinken, the minister for foreign relations Pandor called for the US to drop steel tariffs wagered on South Africa. The tariffs in question impact the $670mln of steel and aluminium exports that head to the US and were imposed by President Trump in 2018.
  • Reports earlier this week that the army had been put on standby to retain civility in the face of widespread unrest has been clarified by the armed forces, stating that its forces had not been deployed, adding that any authorisation would be targeted at preserving heath, life and property.
  • Fin24 cite an agricultural expert as saying that the worst of South Africa’s food price crisis could now be over.
  • News24 write that Eskom’s staffing levels remain inadequate, with many power stations running with major gaps in both technical skills and knowledge. The submission of the utility’s new retail tariff plans shows the utility is looking to unbundle generation, transmission and distribution. The utility looks to unbundle these services in an attempt to reflect cost drivers more effectively, and will be considered by government by early November.
