Parliament Debates Fiscal Consolidation Package In Third Reading

  • The Chamber of Deputies starts the final reading of the government's fiscal consolidation package, which could reduce the budget deficit by CZK97bn next year and by CZK150bn the following year. Finance Minister Zbynek Stanjura was unable to estimate when parliament could vote on the package, but it is unlikely that it will happen today. Bills can only be discussed in third reading during a specific time window on Wednesdays and Fridays, which gives the opposition more opportunities to obstruct the debate.
  • The Czech Fiscal Council warned that "Czech public finances are still in a significant imbalance" as the impact of Covid-era steps has been deepened by new measures in 2022, introduced in response to the increase in energy commodity prices. The panel called on the government implement austerity measures and continue fiscal consolidation efforts in the coming years.
  • DenikN reports that the government is pressuring President Petr Pavel to appoint a new ambassador to Russia while some in Pavel's entourage believe that there is no need to still have a top-level diplomatic envoy in Moscow.
