CZECHIA: Parliament Speaker Marketa Pekarova Adamova Says Won't Seek Re-Election

CZECHIA

Chamber of Deputies Speaker and TOP 09 leader Marketa Pekarova Adamova will retire from parliament after this term due to health reasons, according to a statement posted on her social media. She was due to contest the upcoming election from the top spot on the ruling Spolu coalition's list in the capital.

  • The Speaker's decision will trigger talks within Spolu (consisting of Prime Minister Fiala's ODS as well as KDU-CSL and TOP 09) on how to reallocate her prestigious spot on the Prague electoral list, with earlier reports noting that ODS was eyeing the position for Defence Minister Jana Cernochova.
  • It may also affect TOP 09's election campaign after party executives persuaded her to stay on as a leader until the November congress, even as she may be unable to fully engage in campaign activities. In the last parliamentary election, Pekarova Adamova received the highest number of vote out of all elected MPs.
  • Czechia needs to hold a parliamentary election by October 2025. The ruling coalition enters the campaign period on the defensive, following the exit of the Pirate Party, backlash against austerity measures, recent setbacks in regional and Senate elections, and continued dominance of ex-PM Babis's ANO in opinion polls.
