CZECHIA: PM Fiala & FinMin Stanjura To Brief Media On Fiscal Matters

CZECHIA
  • Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Finance Minister Zbynek Stanjura will hold a media briefing at 12:00GMT/13:00CET to discuss budget developments in 2024. This will be followed by the release of budget data for the month of December at 13:00GMT/14:00CET. The deficit target for last year was increased to CZK282bn from the original target of CZK252bn in response to the floods that swept across Central Europe last autumn.
  • CNB Governor Ales Michl reiterated his call on the authorities to balance the budget in order to curb inflation. The official told CNN Prima News reaffirmed his commitment to hawkish monetary policy after the Bank Board paused its rate-cutting cycle last month. Michl noted that "the biggest inflationary risks are the state budget deficit and excessive amount of money in circulation."
  • STAN leader Vit Rakusan said that his party was hoping to join government again after the parliamentary election that has to be held by autumn 2025. With 33 MPs, STAN is currently the third largest party in the Chamber of Deputies after ex-Prime Minister Babis' ANO (71) and Prime Minister Fiala's ODS (34).
