PM Orban Leads The Polls Ahead of General Election

HUNGARY
  • PM Orban, who has been in power since 2010, is set to win a fourth straight term on April 3rd according to latest polls (source: Politico).
  • Orban’s party Fidesz currently leads the united opposition by 4 ppt (49% vs. 44%), but the election is still expected to be the ‘tightest’ since Orban took office.
  • As a reminder, the ‘opposition’ consists of a coalition of six parties, which announced late 2020 that they will run together in the 2022 election in order to defeat ruling Fidesz party, in attempt to strengthen ties with the EU.
  • We have seen in the past year that the ongoing dispute with the EU bloc due to some political divergence has been weighing on HUF (relative to the Euro).
  • PM Orban kicked off the election campaign over the weekend, announcing that Hungary will extend the price cap on fuel for another three months and also plans to expand family support schemes and potentially even increase financial support depending on the performance of economic activity.
