POLAND: Parliament Debates NBP's 2023 Operations

POLAND
  • Parliament will discuss the NBP's 2023 operations starting from 11:45BST/12:45CEST. The matter was earlier discussed by the Public Finance Committee (FPB), whose report will also be debated today, alongside a separate report prepared by the Supreme Audit Office (NIK). The NIK's report negatively assessed the central bank's activity, noting that the Monetary Policy Council (MPC) cut rates in 2023 without adequately communicating its plans and knowing that this could push inflation above the target range over the horizon of the central bank's projections.
  • Money.pl reported that the government will in the coming days submit the name of its nominee for a seat in the European Commission. The article suggests that the candidate will hail from PM Donald Tusk's Civic Coalition and the decision will be made by Tusk and a narrow group of his closest confidantes. Money.pl wrote that three portfolios are mentioned as those that Poland is most likely to get: defence, EU expansion and energy.
  • Finance Minister Andrzej Domanski called for an acceleration in work on lowering national insurance contributions for entrepreneurs, which has divided the ruling coalition.
