Italian hydropower reserves last week – calendar week 40 – edged higher by 0.01TWh to 3.21TWh, widening the surplus to the five-year average, Entso-E data showed.

  • Stocks widened the surplus to the five-year average to 0.09TWh, from 0.08TWh the week before.
  • Reserves, however, remained 0.12TWh below levels seen during the same time last year.
  • Power demand in Italy averaged 30.16GW last week, compared with 30.2GW the week before.
  • Hydropower generation from pumped storage was stable last week at 644MW. Output from reservoirs was also stable at 636MW last week.
  • Hydro run-of-river generation edged higher by 224MW last week to 4.28GW.
  • Solar PV output in Italy last week decreased by 537MW to 2.82GW, while combined offshore and onshore wind output fell by 611MW to 2.71GW.
  • Gas-fired generation in Italy decreased by 433MW on the week to 10.19GW.
  • Precipitation in Torino – close to Italy’s hydro intensive region – last week totalled 53.1mm, above the seasonal average of 10.5mm.
  • Looking forward, ECMWF weather forecasts for Torino suggested precipitation at 39.1mm this week, above the seasonal average of 12.8mm.
