Putin to Meet Leaders at Kazakhstan, White House Considers Russian Aluminium Ban

  • President Putin holds talks today with Turkish President Erdogan in Kazakhstan. He will also hold talks with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Russian Energy Week continues with Deputy Prime Minister Novak scheduled to speak.
  • The White House is considering a ban on Russian aluminium which has been long shielded from sanctions due to its importance in everything from automobiles and skyscrapers to iPhones. Three options are being considered: an outright ban, increasing tariffs, or sanctioning the company that produces the nation’s metal, Bloomberg report according to people familiar with the decision-making.
  • The Ministry of Finance has begun discussing the use of the digital ruble in the budget process as part of plans to pilot the scheme next year, the Deputy Finance Minister told Izvestia. The digital ruble will allow the state to better track the targeted spending of the budget, make targeted payments and optimise the process of returning unspent money, the central bank said.
  • Data-wise, gold and forex reserve figures cross at 1400BST/1600 local time.
