Ramaphosa Stages First Defence in Farm Theft Saga

SOUTH AFRICA
  • News24 report that the ANC have now extended the step-aside rule to everyone competing for leadership positions across the party. This rule prevents those accused of crimes from running for leadership in the ANC – a move which has been seen as a targeted measure to prevent supporters of ex-President Zuma from running a successful campaign against Ramaphosa in the leadership elections due later this year.
  • On the accusations against Ramaphosa and his involvement in the Phala Phala scandal, the Daily Maverick writes that the President’s testimony to an independent panel will likely shed some light on the affair, but there is very little chance of any impeachment proceedings advancing from here.
  • Nonetheless, opposition parties are due to meet today to discuss options surrounding the President, which include the possible use of a section 89 committee – which would move to use constitutional powers to remove the President.
  • The President has reportedly testified that ‘only’ $600,000 was stolen from his farm – significantly less than the $4 million reported originally, according to News24. The piece also noted that other aspects of the initial reports were inaccurate, and that details had been submitted to the Public Protector.
  • SACCI Business Confidence crosses later today, but is likely to take a backseat to the US CPI release at 1330BST/0830ET. Markets look for M/M CPI to rise 0.2%, and 0.5% for ex-food and energy.
