Recovery in Passenger Loads at China's Airlines in Jan

Passenger loads at China’s top three airlines are rebounding as travel picks up again according to Bloomberg.

  • The January data was boosted by extra travel related to the Lunar New Year holidays as the country reopens following covid restrictions.
  • China Southern Airlines had the highest passenger load factor filling 72.7% of seats in January, an increase of 63% from a year ago. Air China has a passenger load factor of 69.9% and China Eastern Airlines at 68.3%.
  • A Civil Aviation Administration of China official said last month that China expects the number of international flights to rebound to between 15% and 25% of levels before the pandemic by the end of March. CAAC said passenger traffic in January was 74.5% of the level in the same month of 2019
  • International flight passenger traffic improved in January according to the Shanghai Securities News. China Eastern was operating 52 international routes with 302 weekly flights on 6 Feb but is expected to increase to 60 routes and 410 weekly flights by 28 Feb.
