Refiner Struggles with Low Rhine Water Level

Refiner OMV is “observing a run on heating oil and diesel” due to low water levels in the Rhine, supply disruption and a shift toward oil for power production.

  • Southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland are struggling with deliveries due to such low river levels of the Rhine. The Rhine is near to closing to commercial traffic, and barges are already having to travel with part cargoes to pass through. Switzerland has already used emergency fuel stocks and OMV are sourcing more supplies via the Danube.
  • A reduction in OMV Vienna capacity and maintenance at Burghausen site until mid August is making the situation worse.
