POWER: Renewables Reached 59% Of German Power Gen in 2024

Renewables accounted for 59% of Germany’s power generation in 2024, compared with 56% in 2023, Bnetza data showed.
- German electricity generation stood at 431.6TWh last year, down by 4.2% on the year.
- Wind generation was the largest electricity source last year with onshore wind at 111.9TWh in 2024, compared with 118.8TWh in 2023.
- Offshore wind output stood at 25.7TWh last year, up from 23.5TWh the year before.
- Solar PV generation in Germany rose to 63.3TWh in 2024, up from 55.7TWh in 2023.
- Biomass output declined to 36TWh in 2024, compared with 37.8TWh the year before.
- Fossil-fuel fired generation in 2024 declined by 10.9% on the year to 176.8TWh, with hard-coal declining by 31.2% YoY and lignite by 8.8% YoY.
- German gas-fire power generation last year increased by 8.6% on the year to 56.9TWh, reaching a share of 13.2% on the total power supply.
- German power imports last year rose to 67TWh, compared with 54.3TWh in 2023, while exports declined to 35.1TWh in 2024, compared with 39TWh a year earlier.
- German day-ahead power prices last year declined to an average of €78.51/MWh, compared with €95.18/MWh the year before.
- Negative priced hours rose to 457 in 2024, up from 301 hours in 2023, while prices spikes reduced.
