Qatari outlet Al Araby Al Jadeed reports that according to its sources, indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas on a Gaza ceasefire-for-hostages deal have reached the stage of exchanging names of hostages and prisoners via mediators. Hamas is said to have passed to Egypt a list of ill or elderly Israeli hostages that would be released as part of a first phase in the agreement.
- The article writes, "The source pointed out that the parties are unprecedentedly serious about reaching an agreement,". According to the report, an Israeli delegation will travel to Cairo today (9 Dec) to discuss the implementation of a 60-day transition that would result in the IDF temporarily pulling back from areas of Gaza enabling more aid and fuel to enter.
- A major stumbling block remains the need for Hamas and Fatah (the Palestinian Authority that governs the West Bank) to agree on the post-conflict administration of Gaza. The report claims Egyptian mediators pressuring PA President Mahmoud Abbas to meet with Hamas after the latter agreed to the formation of a post-war committee of bureaucrats.
- Speaking on the sidelines of a crypto conference in Abu Dhabi, US President-elect Donald Trump's nominee to serve as his Special Envoy to the Middle East Steven Witkoff said that he wanted the hostages to be freed before Trump's inauguration on 20 Jan, saying “It’s not [going to be] a pretty day if they are not released.”
