Russian Share of Total Crude Imports to India up 42%

Imports of cheap Russian oil to India in May have surpassed the combined purchases from traditional suppliers such as Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the UAE, and the US.

  • India imports from Russia in May increased 15% from the April peak to an average of 1.96mbpd at a record high of 8.6m tonnes according to Vortexa. Russia now accounts for 42% of India's total crude oil imports.
  • The rise in Russia's market share in India has coincided with a corresponding decline in oil shipments from Middle Eastern sources. The share of oil imports from the OPEC reached an all-time low of 39% in May. Saudi Arabia's shipments fell to the lowest level since February 2021 at 560k tonnes.
