TRANSPORTATION: Ryanair earnings call. Read-through for the sector themes
TRANSPORTATION
O'Leary is pessimistic on capacity - still sees it constrained in Europe - a positive for yields/fares generally but can have mixed impact on unit cost side;
- Boeing delivery delays has seen FY26 (to Mar '26) passenger expectations get cut from 215m to 210 and now 206m - that is only +3% yoy. It was originally expecting 25 aircraft for summer '25 - its getting 9 now. The backlog is coming from early '24 max groundings and not helped by staff strikes since.
- Sees Pratt & Whitney engine issues also constraining Airbus capacity in Europe (issuers affected were Air-Baltic and Wizz).
- Interestingly re. engine maintenance backlogs (see strong growth in Lufthansa Technik), Ryanair flags potentially setting up 1-2 in-house shops itself.
On current trading;
- Forward bookings for summer +1% yoy, prices "very modestly up"
- in-line with peers on summer bookings being firm
On taxes;
O'Leary is always vocal about it and today was no different; "Trump isn't always wrong and if you want growth in European air travel, abolish these **** taxes"
- Sweden: scrapping tax will see capacity into it boosted by 30%
- UK: increasing tax and according to O'Leary "trying to distract everybody by supporting a third runway in Heathrow" will see capacity cut.
- Note Heathrow, Europe's largest airport by passenger numbers, has been running at capacity for many years due to not having a 3rd runway (most major European airports have 3). Ryanair uses Stanstead as its hub, likely driving the complaints.
- Germany; "The German government seems to think that the future -- that the way to fund the economy is just tax the *** out of the air passengers".
- Special mention was reserved for Frankfurt; "it cost you close to €60 for a per passenger walk through the bloody airport...easyJet have left in huge numbers...we have the same number of aircraft based there, as we do in Weeze on the Dutch border."
- Worth noting Lufthansa has also complained about costs at Frankfurt
- Regionals like Niederheim, Baden-Baden are more attractive to Ryanair.
- Italy; in regional municipals where tax has gone capacity is going into
- France: we have flagged hefty solidarity tax increases - local papers say that is reportedly still tabled for implementation (details unclear). It didn't' get much of a speech from O'Leary today.
