MNI BRIEF: US Dec Core PCE Inflation In Line With Expectations

MNI (WASHINGTON) - U.S. core PCE inflation in December came in at 0.156%, on the softer side of expectations for 0.2%, and was 2.8% on the year, unchanged from November. Headline PCE inflation was 0.256% for the month and 2.6% for the 12-month rate, in line with expectations, the Bureau of Economic Analysis said Friday. 

In a separate report, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said the employment cost index rose 0.9% in the fourth quarter, a tenth weaker than markets expected, but a tenth faster than its third quarter rate. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said this week the FOMC expects disinflation to continue as interest rates remain significantly restrictive.
