SCOPA Resumes Eskom Hearings, Gordhan To Appeal Court Order

  • Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) begins its two-day meeting to examine the corruption allegations made by former Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter. The SCOPA summoned various law enforcement officials for today as part of a series of hearings and tomorrow will meet with new Eskom board to discuss de Ruyter's claims.
  • Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan will appeal against court order to exempt hospitals, schools and police stations from load-shedding. The official argued that this would pose a risk to "current efforts to stabilise the national grid." The order handed down by a Pretoria court last week gives Gordhan 60 days to comply.
  • SARB Deputy Governor said that South Africa's gray listing by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is unlikely to immediately affect the country's credit ratings. "The reason why the ratings agencies are saying that they're not going to yet look at it negatively is that the nature of gray listing is that you are under enhanced monitoring," she said in an interview, adding that "it only becomes a problem if you're missing your deadline."
