Senate Rejects Impeachment Bid Against Pinera

CHILE

The Chilean Senate has rejected a motion to remove President Sebastian Pinera from office, terminating an impeachment process launched by the lower house last week. Pinera has faced allegations of irregularities in the sale of a mining company, revealed in the Pandora Papers.

  • Chileans will cast their polls in general elections this Sunday, in which Pinera is not running. His term expires in March.
  • Polling shows that right-wing lawmaker José Antonio Kast has closed the gap on main left-wing candidate Gabriel Boric Font and is the frontrunner ahead of the first round of voting.
