Shoigu Holds Talks With Foreign Counterparts, Including U.S. Defence Secretary

RUSSIA

U.S. Secretary of Defence Lloyd J. Austin III spoke with his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu on two occasions over just three days, amid a flurry of talks with other defence chiefs, including Ukraine's Oleksii Reznikov.

  • According to the readout of Austin's first phone call with Shoigu, he "emphasized the importance of maintaining lines of communication amid the ongoing war against Ukraine."
  • In the follow up call requested by the Russian side, "Secretary Austin rejected any pretext for Russian escalation and reaffirmed the value of continued communication amid Russia’s unlawful and unjustified war against Ukraine."
  • In the meantime, Austin spoke with Reznikov to "reiterate the unwavering U.S. commitment to supporting Ukraine's ability to counter Russia's aggression."
  • Elsewhere, the readouts from Shoigu's talks with his British, Turkish and French counterparts showed that he made unfounded claims that Ukraine was planning to use a "dirty bomb."
