Steag Request Early 460MW Coal Plant Exit

German utility Steag has asked for its 460MW Herne 4 coal-fired power plant to leave the market by this month – earlier than expectations for March 2025 – with the unit expected to be put in reserve, it said.

  • “In our view the unit will not be operated in the market anymore, Steag told Montel.
  • The relevant TSO and the network regulator must approve the closures to ensure the security of supply before deciding to possibly put the unit in the reserve market.
  • The unit is offline for maintenance until 16 September.
