Swiss Hydro Stocks Remain At Deficit to Averages

Hydropower reserves in Switzerland rose quicker week on week by 2.4 percentage points last week to 78.8% of capacity as of 21 August but stock levels remained below the five-year and long-term averages, BFE data show.

  • Stocks rose quicker last week at 2.4 percentage points, compared with 0.9 percentage points a week earlier.
  • The deficit to the five-year average remained stable at 3.2 percentage points and also to the long-term average at 4.3 percentage points.
  • The largest regional increase was seen in the canton Valais, where 45% of all hydro stocks are located, of 180GWh.
  • Overall hydropower output in Switzerland increased last week on the week amid higher power demand due to temperatures above the seasonal norm. Output from pumped storage was almost stable on the week at 831MW. Run-of-river generation edged down slightly to 403MW while generation from hydro reservoirs increased by 441MW to 1.62GW.
  • Forecasts for strong precipitation in Sion, canton Valais, for this week are likely support inflows into reserves.
