UK: The UK media has been focused this morning on an amendment which is to be
voted on next Tuesday which could result in a situation akin to a UK government
shutdown.
- Conservative MP Dominic Grieve and Labour MP Margaret Beckett have tabled an
amendment which would deny funding to the education department, the housing,
communities and local govt department, the international development department
and the work and pensions department.
- Parliamentary procedure dictates that this spending needs to be approved twice
a year with the next vote due on Tuesday.
- If the amendment is passed, funding would be withdrawn in the event of a no
deal Brexit. This would in effect tie the hands of the next PM in negotiations
with Brussels unless he was willing to accept potential disruption to schools
and benefits.
