US President Donald Trump’s trade policy is going to compel Canada to revisit abandoned cross-country pipeline projects aimed at transporting its domestically produced crude to global markets, Canada's Natural Resources Minister told the WSJ.

  • "We must free-up our over-regulated resource sector and invoke national security to build pipelines east and west rapidly," said Tim Sargent, the former deputy Canadian trade minister during the first Trump administration
  • Most of Canada’s 4m b/d of production is US bound, headed to refiners in the US Midwest and Gulf Coast.
  • In 2016, the Canadian government rejected a proposed 525k b/d pipeline from Alberta - to the Pacific Coast.
  • TC Energy also abandoned plans for the Energy East 1m b/d pipeline from Western Canada to New Brunswick – opening up Canadian crudes to the Atlantic.
  • Wilkinson said it may be appropriate to revisit a west-to-east pipeline, the WSJ reported.
  • Quebec Premier Francois Legault told reporters that currently, there is no support in the province for a west-to-east pipeline, but Trump’s future policy may change the situation in the future,"
